The inch plant (Tradescantia spp.) is a plant with multiple names. It has traditionally been known as the ‘Wandering Jew’ plant but I prefer the new updated version ‘Wandering Dude’. The original nickname came from a European legend about a man doomed to wander the earth forever. Well that doesn’t sound like fun and the Tradescantia Zebrina (or Inch Plant) is far from a cursed legend. He’s an explorer who wants to travel right out of his pot to far off lands (like the living room). Inch plants are well suited to life in the home. They? thrive in bright indirect light and warm temperatures. With shiny sparkly purple and silver striped foliage this dude is a show piece.
If kept outdoors (during the summer) the silvery leaves will turn into a bold hot pink if placed in direct or strong sunlight. Don’t be alarmed.? Your Tradescantia Zebrina is just doing his thing.? If you don’t like his flashy new style just put him in a shadier spot and he will be back to his usual self in no time.
Tradescantia is not pet safe however it will probably do little harm if chewed on. It’s better to keep it out of reach of curious paws and little hands. The sap within the leaves and stems can cause contact dermatitis on the skin for those with a sensitivity to it. Wash your hands after handling and you should be fine
