The Monstera deliciosa has been a statement piece in homes for over 50 years. There has been a resurgence in popularity over the years as new generations discover the lush tropical foliage of this bold plant.

Monsteras are famous for their natural leaf-holes, which is why you may see them referred to as Swiss Cheese Plant or split leaf philodendron. No matter what you call it, the Monstera deliciosa is a majestic, easy to care for lady that will brighten up even the dullest room.

Botanical Name: Philodendron Monstera deliciosa.

Common Names: Monstera

Description: Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America these plants have glossy heart shaped leaves which develops its unique splits in its maturity. It is a climbing evergreen perennial vine that is perhaps most noted for its large perforated leaves on thick plant stems and its long cord-like aerial roots.

Caution: Monstera deliciosa is considered mildly toxic if ingested and can cause irritation. Keep it away from pets and children.
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but may not develop its characteristic perforations or grow as vigorously. Watering: Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Monstera prefers well-draining soil and is susceptible to overwatering, which can cause root rot. Temperature: Prefers average room temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) and benefits from warmer conditions. It's sensitive to cold drafts. Humidity: Adaptable to normal indoor humidity levels but appreciates occasional misting or a humidifier, especially in drier climates. Maintenance: Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves as needed. Pruning can also control its size and shape. Support: Provide a moss pole or trellis if you want the plant to climb, as it's a natural climber and can grow quite tall if given the space. Cleaning: Wiping the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth helps remove dust and keeps the foliage glossy.
Edible Fruit: In its natural habitat, mature Monstera plants produce fruit known as "Monstera deliciosa" or "Mexican breadfruit." When ripe, this fruit is edible, though it's important to wait until it's fully ripe as unripe fruit can cause irritation.
Foliage: Monstera deliciosa is characterized by its large, glossy, and deeply cut leaves with unique perforations and splits, resembling Swiss cheese, hence its common name. As the plant matures, these holes and splits become more prominent. Growth Habit: It's a climbing vine in its natural habitat but can be cultivated as a potted plant or allowed to climb with support.
