Dracaena is a genus of about 100150 species of flowering plants in the family Bambusoideae. They are mostly tropical and subtropical, but a few species are found in colder regions. The majority of dracaenas are shrubs or small trees, but a few are climbers or lianas. Many dracaenas have long, thin leaves that are either glossy or slightly serrated. The flowers are usually solitary, but some may be in clusters. The fruit is a capsule that contains several seeds. The genus Dracaena was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The name comes from the Ancient Greek words draco meaning dragon and aeno meaning to bear. According to one source, the word may also be derived from the Indian word drak, which means a kind of tree with an edible fruit resembling a grape. A number of different species were once classified under the name Dracaena, but these have since been divided into numerous genera including Dichrostachys, Euodia, Hibiscus, Kalanchoe, Litsea, Moringa, Passiflora, Phoenix and Raffles
